Carol M. Udstrand, MA Recognized for Excellence in Special Education
Carol M. Udstrand has devoted her career to helping students with learning disabilities

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, August 21, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carol M. Udstrand, Learning Specialist at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in special education.

With 37 years of experience in her field, Mrs. Udstrand specializes in helping students with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, and other cognitive disabilities. As a Learning Specialist at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, she is responsible for meeting with students with learning challenges, prescreening students for possible disabilities, arranging accommodations such as scanners, notetakers, extra test time, and computer assisted devices. She assists in giving orientations to new students, and selecting appropriate courses. In addition, Mrs. Udstrand helps students who are suspended due to unsatisfactory progress in school to see if they might have a disability, and if they would benefit from accommodations. She became involved in her field when she was practice-teaching with a student who spoke eloquently, but whose writing was extremely poor. The teacher labeled him as a poor student, and misjudged his potential. She wondered if she and other teachers made those same assumptions, and missed students who had higher abilities. She attributes her success to her love for working with fascinating students who have complex issues and still strive to succeed.

Ms. Udstrand received her Master of Arts in Special Education from the University of St. Thomas in 1982 and her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from St. Catherine University in 1972. She has been a member of the Association on Higher Education and Disability and the Minnesota Association on Higher Education and Disability. After retiring, she plans to become a mentor and teach reading to adults so they can be more independent when they go to college.
