Kathleen Hanks noted for "total developmental approach" to occupational therapy

GRAND RAPIDS, MI, September 9, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kathleen Hanks, Registered Occupational Therapist for Grand Rapids Public Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in occupational therapy.

Regarded an authority in occupational therapy, Kathleen Hanks lends over 37 years of practiced expertise to her position with Grand Rapids Public Schools. There, she manages home community programs and works with children and parents of children suffering from Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and speech disorders. Committed to a "total developmental approach," Ms. Hanks treats the whole child in his or her natural environment. She also educates parents, organizes inclusion programs, works to integrate students with special needs and creates various developmental activities.

One of the founders of the Head-Start pilot program, Ms. Hanks is recognized for her keen ability to determine the neurological disabilities of children, and cater to their educational needs. She lives by the motto, "A Child's work is play," asserting that in order to achieve academic success, children must be supplied with fun and practical exercises. Ms. Hanks is certified in sensory integration and implements her programs throughout Grand Rapids Public Schools, at the Wellerwood Early Childhood Center and the Ken-O-Sha Preschool. Looking forward, Ms. Hanks intends to transition into consultancy.

Ms. Hanks holds a master's degree in early childhood education and a bachelor of science in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University. A registered occupational therapist, she is affiliated with the Michigan Occupational Therapy Association and volunteers at her local school and church. An avid horticulturist, Ms. Hanks spends her free time cultivating plants and interior decorating.
